As human beings we are relational creatures by nature. We live our entire lives in relationship with others, whether through work, family or friends. Do you ever find yourself repeating the same patterns in relationships over and over again?
In psychoanalysis, great weight is given to our earliest relationships. In some schools of thought, it is our earliest relationships that color the way we relate to and experience others for the rest of our lives. Without insight into these early connections, we are doomed to continually repeat the experience over and over until we hopefully get it right.
This compulsion to repeat is really our innate drive to master our environments and our experience. In a way, it's our saving grace, as our drive to master our inner and out worlds means we will constantly give ourselves opportunities to rework and heal old wounds. From this perspective, even our most troubled relationships are also great opportunities to heal.
