Below I offer an exercise borrowed from Donna Farhi's
"The Breathing Book" for breathing into your organs
that you can practice at home or in the office. If you
practice this simple, yet powerful exercise, please feel
free to send me an email and tell me what you
discover. (read more...)

As a psychotherapist and healer, I am deeply interested in how we
metabolize and store experience in our bodies. My path has taken me to
explore both Western and Eastern forms of psychotherapy and energy
work. Various experiences in my yoga practice have lead me to search
for understanding and explanations. I first explored yoga looking for
better physical health. What I found, however, was a system for
reintegrating mind with body and spirit. Yoga literally means union in
Sanskrit, the ancient Hindu language in which much of India's sacred
texts are written.

What is the link between the mind and the body? The link
is the breath, which also happens to be the same word for spirit in
Chinese (chi). Interestingly, the act of breathing is the one bodily
function that is both voluntary and involuntary. We don't have to think
about breathing to breathe, but by consciously controlling the breath,
the possibilities are great.

In both my healing and psychotherapy work, I experience my patients'
struggles to find meaningful connection both in themselves, as well as
with others. The common thread appears to be a physical and emotional disconnect based in fear. Physically, this shows up in the body as an
inner grip or tension, often around the heart and throat both in the
front and the back of the body and often in symptoms of pain. The
challenge is that, often, this physical tension is unconscious. I
believe that until one is in right relationship with Self, he will be
unable to fully love another. We spend so much energy trying to hide
from ourselves, that when we find ourselves in the position to connect
with another, we are so far away from our truth, hidden behind false
selves, that real connection never happens.

Very few emotions are as destructive to the self as shame. When children are raised by authority figures that use shame as a method of teaching or control, children do not necessarily learn the right way to do things, they learn the right way to hide what they truly feel, think and do in order to avoid directly experiencing the shame being projected onto them.
